Sourcing Logs for Mushroom Growing
Click above to view this previously recorded webinar from Steve Gabriel, who discusses the basic considerations for buying and selling logs (bolts) for mushroom cultivation. Note that some information, like cost of bolts, may be outdated as this video is from 2021, but the general content is still accurate and relevant.
Click above to view this previously recorded webinar from Peter Smallidge, who covers the safe and ethical harvesting of mushroom bolts in the context of forest ecology.
As more people look to cultivate woodland mushrooms, there is a demand for high quality logs (called "bolts") for use as a material. Learn about the specifications for buying or selling logs for mushrooms including species, handling, pricing, and transport with the factsheet and webinar recording below.
We also host a list below of farmers, loggers, arborists, etc who are interested in supplying fresh cut logs for specialty mushroom (primarily shiitake) cultivation. While we focus on the Northeast US (Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C.), we've included suppliers outside this region who requested to be listed. We endeavor to update this list twice a year when time allows.
