Kevin Miller | Farmer Veteran
Kevin Miller dedicated 15 years to serving in the U.S. Army before being medically retired in 2013 following injuries sustained in Afghanistan, which led to the amputation of his leg. Since then, he has found a new mission working at Sheffer’s Grassland Dairy in Hoosick Falls, NY.
Growing up in a suburban area, Kevin’s only exposure to agriculture was his grandfather’s small chicken farm. Unlike poultry farming, dairy operations require handling large machinery—something he has embraced as both a challenge and an adventure. Learning to operate big tractors and farm equipment has been an adjustment, but he enjoys the experience, acknowledging that while it may be a bit more difficult as an amputee, it’s still rewarding.
Kevin credits his military background for instilling the strong work ethic essential in farming. Life on the farm is unpredictable, and the work never stops. He acknowledges that failure is part of the process but sees it as an opportunity to learn and grow. In a video by The Farmer Veteran Coalition, he advises, “You can’t be shy to ask for help, especially from farmers who have been doing it for a while.” Through the coalition, Kevin has gained access to vital tools and resources, along with a nationwide network of experienced farmers eager to offer guidance and support.
For veterans looking to transition into farming, Kevin recommends starting slow—just as one would in the military. There’s nothing wrong with beginning small and expanding over time. Following his own advice, he has gradually built up his own pig-raising operation at home, adding a little more each year. “Farming is a constant learning experience,” he says, embracing the journey one step at a time.
