Farmer veteran James Turrell hosted fellow veterans on his farm for a hands-on workshop on high tunnels, sponsored by Farm Ops, highlighting their use in season extension, crop protection, and pest management.
Participants learned methods for covering high tunnels with plastic while learning about site selection considerations. After lunch, Turrell led discussions on end wall options, ventilation, irrigation, crop selection, and the overall impact of high tunnels on farm businesses.
“Being able to see several examples of high tunnels being used in different ways in the same area was very helpful for me,” said veteran Charles Radke, a workshop participant. “James was able to expound on a wide variety of farming topics, and I appreciated his ability to elaborate on more specific information as asked.”
The event provided veterans with practical experience and insight into how high tunnels can improve farm productivity while mitigating weather and pest challenges.
