Farm Ops Scholarship: Mushroom Farming 101

Farm Ops provided four scholarships to farmer veterans to attend a hands-on mushroom cultivation event hosted by farmer veteran David DeLaMater and his wife, Mary, at their Dough Haven Farm.

The event offered participants an opportunity to learn about sustainable farming practices, mushroom cultivation, and the health benefits of incorporating mushrooms into a balanced diet. David and Mary shared their personal farming experiences and demonstrated how they use logs from Timber Stand Improvement (TSI) forest management practices to grow specialty mushrooms sustainably.

Attendees participated in a hands-on workshop, learning how to inoculate logs with shiitake and oyster mushroom spawn. Each veteran was able to take home an inoculated log to start their own mushroom cultivation.

The scholarships, provided by Farm Ops, aimed to support farmer veterans in gaining practical skills and knowledge to apply to their own agricultural pursuits. Farm Ops, an organization dedicated to assisting veterans in transitioning to careers in farming, has consistently worked to create opportunities for veterans to connect with experienced farmers and learn sustainable practices.

David DeLaMater, a fellow veteran, emphasized the importance of sharing knowledge and resources within the farming community. “It’s rewarding to see veterans excited about sustainable agriculture and taking these skills back to their own farms,” he said.
