Avian Influenza Information for Spanish Speakers: Watch Our New Video

Faced with the threat posed by a highly pathogenic version of avian influenza (HPAI) affecting backyard flocks and commercial poultry producers, educators from the Cornell Cooperative Extension Livestock Program Work Team (CCE) have been working diligently to educate producers and the public on steps to prevent the risk of spread on farms.

To ensure that their message will reach all audiences, including Spanish-speaking farmers and communities across the state, the CCE Livestock team approached the Cornell Small Farms Program to develop an accessible HPAI resource in Spanish.

The product of this collaboration is called “Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI): How to Protect Your Poultry,” and is a short video with narration in Spanish that provides context about the disease and current risks, as well as a brief description of the sources of spread, symptoms, and biosecurity steps to prevent on-farm contagion.

We encourage you to share this resource, along with the other HPAI educational resources that CCE and others have developed.

If you spot signs of HPAI or another disease in your flock, please report it. HPAI could destroy the businesses of any poultry farmers around you, and could mean the loss of many backyard flocks too. The good news is that you can get compensation for the birds killed as a result of HPAI, and the information you report about a sick flock will not be shared to any other agency. Please show solidarity with your fellow flock owners by educating yourself and reporting signs of flock illness.
