DESCRIPTION:This event is offered for free for New York State veterans through funding from NYSDAM.\nNon-veterans wishing to attend may register through Central New York Dairy\, Livestock & Field Crops here: CCE Registration Form \nJoin us for a hands-on livestock fencing workshop! This in-person event will introduce participants to the basics of fencing for livestock\, including a close look at common materials and practical techniques for installing both temporary and permanent systems. Please note: this workshop will not cover deer exclusion fencing. \nWhat to Expect:\n\nMorning Session: Learn how to set up two types of temporary fencing as part of a complete fencing system for pastured pigs. The methods taught here are transferable and can be adapted for a variety of other livestock systems.\nLunch: We’ll provide pizza\, salad\, and seltzer. Please bring a water bottle.\nAfternoon Session: Get hands-on experience building a corner assembly for a permanent fence. You’ll learn why corners are critical to fence stability and how to properly stretch and tension fence wire for lasting durability.\n\nThe workshop takes place at Turrell Farms in West Oneonta\, NY\, and will be led by Farmer Veterans James Turrell and Nina Saeli\, along with Ashley McFarland\, Area Livestock Specialist with CCE Central New York Dairy\, Livestock & Field Crops (CNYDLFC). \nWhether you’re just getting started with fencing or looking to sharpen your skills\, this workshop is a great opportunity to build confidence\, trade ideas with fellow farmers\, and gain practical experience you can use right away. You may bring our own saw if you choose\, there will be no cutting in this class. \n  \n11:30 -12:00  \nIntro to NYS Forestry Best Management Practices for Water Quality – Emily Johnston\, SWCD District Technicians. This session will cover the background of what Best Management Practices are and why they are important to protect soil and water resources from erosion and pollution before\, during\, and after a timber harvest. \n  \nNoon  \nLunch will be provided at noon\, followed by a 1:00 PM session in the County Forest. The session\, Curtis Shaffer\, National Wild Turkey Federation\, and Emily Johnston will introduce best management practices\, their importance for protecting soil and water resources\, and implementation on forest roads and trails. Building soil health can help farms adapt to extreme weather\, suppress weeds\, and improve overall crop performance. \nGuest presenter will be Dr. Joseph Amsili\, Senior Extension Associate and Program Director for the New York State Soil Health Team. Also speaking will be Crystal Stewart\, an Extension Vegetable Specialist for Eastern NY Commercial Horticulture Program.
