This fact sheet provides an overview of different container methods, considerations, and provides further resources for support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"containers-for-urban-farming\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Containers for Urban Farming<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like raised bed gardening, container gardening is an above-ground technique.\u00a0Containers come in a variety of forms, are typically smaller than raised beds, and allow for the planting of only one of a few plants, and are easily portable.\u00a0Containers are also often used with soilless growing mediums, such as potting mixes.\u00a0 Container gardening shares many of the benefits of growing in raised beds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It allows urban farmers to manage soil contamination and plant atop blacktop, concrete, or other spaces unsuitable for in-ground production.\u00a0 Given the portability of containers, container gardening also allows farmers an option for dealing with temporary land tenure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, urban farmers can tap into the urban waste stream to yield a myriad of affordable container options.\u00a0 Riverpark Farm in Manhattan, for example, grows food for the Riverpark Restaurant in recycled milk crates.\u00a0 Other urban farms are planting in plastic wading pools or recycled wooden pallets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In New Jersey, Garden State Urban Farms maintains an entirely portable farm by planting in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthbox.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EarthBoxes<\/a>, a commercially developed container gardening system that claims to double the yield of conventional gardens.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/solefoodfarms.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sole Food Street Farms<\/a> in Vancouver, BC has developed a system of containers that can be moved with a pallet jack or forklift for easy reconfiguration of urban space while eliminating contact with pavement and contaminated soils.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"container-considerations\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Container Considerations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When choosing a container type, three main considerations are volume, drainage, and material.\u00a0 All containers should allow adequate drainage, without draining too quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For volume, the bigger is typically the better, and farmers must take into account the root depth of their crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For materials, and particularly when using recycled or salvaged containers, it is important that they contain no toxic substances.\u00a0 Painted or treated wood, plastic containing solvents or high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and metals should be avoided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"extension-resources\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Extension Resources<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Iowa State University Extension offers a two-page factsheet on container vegetable gardening, including suggested cultivars for container production, available for <a href=\"https:\/\/store.extension.iastate.edu\/Product\/Container-Vegetable-Gardening\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">download<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rocklandcce.org\/resources\/outdoor-container-gardening\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rockland County<\/a> also offers a factsheet on outdoor container gardening, including information on fertilizing and potting mix recipes.
