Hoy 31 de marzo, el D\u00eda de C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez, el Cornell Small Farms Program (CSFP) rinde homenaje a Ch\u00e1vez, l\u00edder de esfuerzos organizativos multiculturales y multiling\u00fces por la dignidad de los trabajadores agr\u00edcolas en Estados Unidos. <\/span><\/p>\n

Nos comprometemos a dar a conocer las historias de aquellos que trabajan la tierra y cuyas luchas por el respeto al vivir una vida agr\u00edcola, han establecido una base legal y \u00e9tica para el trabajo que hacemos.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ch\u00e1vez (1927-1993), trabajador manual y veterano de la Marina estadounidense, fue un norteamericano de primera generaci\u00f3n, nacido en Arizona de padres de origen mexicano. Su familia perdi\u00f3 su casa y su negocio durante la Gran Depresi\u00f3n y se vio obligada a unirse a los trabajadores agr\u00edcolas itinerantes en California.<\/span><\/p>\n

En la d\u00e9cada de 1960, los esfuerzos organizativos de Ch\u00e1vez con la Asociaci\u00f3n Nacional de Trabajadores Agr\u00edcolas (NFWA), organizaci\u00f3n que fund\u00f3 con Dolores Huerta, sacaron a la luz las condiciones de trabajo inhumanas y peligrosas de los trabajadores inmigrantes. La NFWA se uni\u00f3 a los trabajadores agr\u00edcolas filipinos para fundar la United Farm Workers of America (UFW) durante una huelga y un boicot de cinco a\u00f1os a las uvas en Delano, California. <\/span><\/p>\n

El boicot termin\u00f3 en el 1970 cuando los productores aceptaron un contrato con la UFW. Este acuerdo sent\u00f3 un precedente de reconocimiento de los trabajadores agr\u00edcolas como parte del movimiento laboral, aunque no gozaran de los mismos derechos que los trabajadores de otros sectores. <\/span><\/p>\n

Aunque la educaci\u00f3n formal de Ch\u00e1vez termin\u00f3 en el octavo curso, su compromiso con el aprendizaje fue constante, y la educaci\u00f3n fue fundamental en su enfoque para garantizar los derechos humanos. Estudi\u00f3 el ejemplo de Gandhi e incorpor\u00f3 a su trabajo las ense\u00f1anzas sociales de la Iglesia Cat\u00f3lica. Dirigi\u00f3 marchas no violentas, desarroll\u00f3 programas de ayuda mutua que inclu\u00edan una cooperativa de cr\u00e9dito y viviendas asequibles, y se someti\u00f3 a ayunos durante semanas para poner de relieve las condiciones de sus compatriotas en los campos. Llev\u00f3 a la UFW a participar en esfuerzos m\u00e1s amplios por el cambio social, incluida la Campa\u00f1a de la Gente Pobre del reverendo Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.<\/span><\/p>\n

El 31 de marzo, d\u00eda de nacimiento de Ch\u00e1vez, fue declarado fiesta nacional en 2014. El estado de California observa la fecha cerrando las oficinas estatales y las escuelas, llamando al servicio comunitario. En otros estados el cierre de oficinas es opcional.<\/span><\/p>\n

En el Small Farms Program aprovechamos esta oportunidad para levantar grupos que contin\u00faan el legado de C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez para reconocer el valor y la dignidad de todas las personas que contribuyen a que la comida llegue a nuestras mesas, entre ellos <\/span>Justicia Migrante<\/span><\/a> en Vermont, la <\/span>Coalici\u00f3n de Trabajadores de Immokalee<\/span><\/a> en Florida, <\/span>Familias Unidas por la Justicia<\/span><\/a> en Washington, y <\/span>Alianza Agr\u00edcola<\/span><\/a> en el Estado de Nueva York. <\/span><\/p>\n

Ya sean propietarios de operaciones agr\u00edcolas, gerentes, supervisores, empleados agr\u00edcolas o aspirantes a agricultor, todos tienen derecho a un nivel de vida decente, a las condiciones de vida y de trabajo dignas, as\u00ed como a apoyo t\u00e9cnico y financiero y a educaci\u00f3n en su propia lengua. Todo ello, y el derecho a perseguir sus metas y sue\u00f1os con el apoyo institucional de las universidades y el estado. <\/span><\/p>\n

Nuestro <\/span>proyecto Futuro en Ag<\/span><\/a> es una iniciativa educativa emergente que prepara a las y los neoyorquinos de habla hispana para el \u00e9xito en la gesti\u00f3n de los negocios agr\u00edcolas. Nos fortalece aprender y compartir las historias de personas que se han propuesto hacer el mundo m\u00e1s equitativo para aquellas personas invisibilizadas por la sociedad. <\/span><\/p>\n
