This session will cover the background of what Best Management Practices are and why they are important to protect soil and water resources from erosion and pollution before\, during\, and after a timber harvest. \n  \nNoon  \nLunch will be provided at noon\, followed by a 1:00 PM session in the County Forest. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the shiitake laying yard to learn about managing shiitakes\, as well as other mushrooms\, as a crop. At this hands-on workshop\, participants will experience soaking\, fruiting and harvesting shiitakes\, and will learn what is required to build your own mushroom yard. In addition\, we will examine where we harvested small pole-size trees used for inoculating the shiitake mushrooms and understand the rationale for harvesting those particular trees as part of forest improvement. Participants can be sure that they will leave this class with mushrooms to try and will gain an understanding of how to profit from this newly recognized crop.

DESCRIPTION:If you are a farmer\, landowner\, or Jefferson County resident interested in learning more about our native grassland birds; Please join us for this in-person presentation by Wildlife Biologist – Liz Simons from New York State Department of Conservation. \nLiz is a Wildlife Biologist in Region 6 working out of the Watertown office. She currently serves as co-chair of the Bird Mammal and Diversity Team and is involved in the grassland bird subteam and the project review working group. She is also the regional representative for the Migratory Game Bird Team. Previously\, she worked as a Wildlife Tech out of the Brownville DEC office. Liz holds a B.S. in Biology and a M.S. in Education from St. Lawrence University.

DESCRIPTION:Livestock Specialist\, Amy Barkley\, will lead this virtual seminar on the basics of meat bird production for farmers interested in diversifying their farm operations. The event will focus on breed selection and chick sourcing\, housing\, and nutritional requirements\, as well as a brief introduction to on-farm processing. Attendees will be provided with a recording of the seminar and additional resources for further exploration. This event aims to help veteran farmers understand the benefits and logistics of small-scale broiler production to expand their farm’s production.

SUMMARY:Project Ground Nesting Bees
DESCRIPTION:Project GNBee – how you can help to preserve our most threatened and valuable pollinators: the ground-nesting\, solitary bees. Ground-nesting\, solitary bees comprise 70% of all bee species. They are valuable\, but vulnerable\, pollinators across the landscapes and habitats of New York. \nPrevious bee conservation initiatives have focused on enhancing floral resources\, but little attention has been focused on preserving nesting habitats. \nWith funding from the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability\, we have developed a community science project aimed at locating\, researching\, and conserving ground-nesting bee aggregations wherever we find them. \nThe talk will provide background on bee biology and life history\, threats to bee populations\, and how you can help us both study and conserve valuable bee nesting sites. \nThis program is valued at $20\, however\, please pay what you are able. Paying more than $20 will help others attend the class.

DESCRIPTION:The Expo is an opportunity for farmers\, agribusinesses and farm-related organizations to share information about the resources and farming opportunities in Columbia and Greene counties for those who are currently farming\, those interested in getting into farming and for landowners interested in making their lands available for farming. \nThe Expo is also a great opportunity for the general public to learn more about the local farming industry and how they can help support local farms. In addition to the sponsoring organizations\, a number of farm-related organizations and businesses will be attending this year’s Expo to provide information on the services they have available to support farmers. Several local farms will also be at the Expo to give samples.
