SUMMARY:Project Ground Nesting Bees
DESCRIPTION:Project GNBee – how you can help to preserve our most threatened and valuable pollinators: the ground-nesting\, solitary bees. Ground-nesting\, solitary bees comprise 70% of all bee species. They are valuable\, but vulnerable\, pollinators across the landscapes and habitats of New York. \nPrevious bee conservation initiatives have focused on enhancing floral resources\, but little attention has been focused on preserving nesting habitats. \nWith funding from the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability\, we have developed a community science project aimed at locating\, researching\, and conserving ground-nesting bee aggregations wherever we find them. \nThe talk will provide background on bee biology and life history\, threats to bee populations\, and how you can help us both study and conserve valuable bee nesting sites. \nThis program is valued at $20\, however\, please pay what you are able. Paying more than $20 will help others attend the class.

SUMMARY:Farm Stress Peer Support Programs
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an upcoming webinar spotlighting three innovative farm stress peer support programs that are empowering farmers through connection\, emotional support\, and access to vital resources. Discover how peer networks are building resilience in rural communities—one conversation at a time. \nThe NC Agromedicine Institute’s Farmer-to-Farmer program connects agricultural producers with trained peers who understand the unique challenges of farm life. Through confidential\, judgment-free conversations\, peer supporters offer emotional support\, share resources\, and help reduce the stigma around seeking help. The program fosters community connection and resilience by encouraging open conversations rooted in shared experience.\nThe Farm Foundation-led Farm Family Wellness Alliance provides free mental health support to all farm families in the U.S. Mental health and wellness services are provided through a multi-layered approach. The first layer is an online community called Togetherall. There\, users have access to a broad array of peer-to-peer support and a library of self-paced resources. If needed\, an additional layer of support is available through Personal Assistance Services (PAS).\nThe Farm First Peer Network offers farmers in Vermont an opportunity to talk to a farmer who is trained in active listening skills\, problem-solving\, and resiliency-building. The peers are available to help with stressful times and have access to many resources\, including a Farm First counselor. Peers come from various types of farms and different areas of the state. Peers can be accessed through the website farmfirst.org. \nOur Presenters: \nMcKayla Robinette grew up on a century farm in eastern North Carolina where she raises beef cattle alongside her family. She holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies with a focus on sustainable agriculture and an M.S. in rural sociology; she is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in public policy and administration. As coordinator for the Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network of North Carolina at the NC Agromedicine Institute\, McKayla leverages her background in production agriculture to help farming families navigate challenges and succeed. \nTimothy Brennan is vice president for programs and strategic impact at Farm Foundation\, a 92-year-old non-profit organization with a mission to build trust and understanding at the intersection of agriculture and society. Before joining Farm Foundation in 2013\, Tim held several different roles at the University of Chicago and Northwestern University. Tim grew up on a small farm in northeastern Ohio and currently manages his own hobby farm just outside of Chicago. \nLeanne Porter\, program manager for Farm First since 2021\, has dedicated over two decades to rural Vermont communities. With a strong background in mental health and education\, she is a skilled mental health training specialist\, equipping individuals to address the unique challenges faced by farmers and their families.

SUMMARY:Air Pruned Raised Beds for Tree Seedling Production
DESCRIPTION:The Cornell Small Farms Program is hosting a hands-on workshop on Air Pruned Raised Beds (APRBs) at Dilmun Hill Student Farm on Saturday\, September 27 at 10:00 a.m. – 12 pm (rain or shine). \nAPRBs offer an innovative\, scalable approach to tree seedling propagation. By naturally pruning roots through air exposure\, this system produces seedlings with stronger root architecture\, higher transplant success\, and the ability to grow large volumes of bare-root stock in a small footprint—no land ownership required. APRBs are adaptable to both urban and rural contexts and support high-density seedling production for a wide range of species. \nParticipants will learn how to construct an APRB and explore key topics including bed management\, growing media\, pest management\, species selection\, seed collection\, preservation\, germination\, and potential markets. This workshop is ideal for producers seeking to diversify into a new\, efficient tree seedling production system. \nThe session will be led by Sean Dembrosky\, owner/operator of Edible Acres\, and Connor Youngerman\, Agroforestry lead with the Cornell Small Farms Program. \nAttendance is free\, registration is required\, and participation is capped at 25.  \nParking and logistics instructions will be available to registrants the week prior. \nIf you have any questions please contact Connor at czy2@cornell.edu

SUMMARY:Farm Ops Offers Veteran Scholarships to Attend Silvopasture on a Shoestring
DESCRIPTION:Farm Ops\, the veterans in agriculture project of the Cornell Small Farms Program\, is offering scholarships to attend CCE Allegany County’s Silvopasture on a Shoestring event. If you are a farmer veteran living in New York State\, you may qualify for a Farm Ops Event of Choice Scholarship. Please click here to visit out Scholarship Page in order to learn more and apply. \nJoin Joshua Greene\, Director of Education at Trees for Graziers\, Jonathan Bates\, Statewide Agroforestry Educator\, and Lynn Bliven\, Ag & Natural Resources Issue Leader with CCE Allegany County at Wild Geese Farm for a full day event that will include classroom and hands-on sessions. The focus will be on DIY silvopasture projects on small grazing farms. Open to farmers and landowners interested in learning the ins and outs of developing or expanding silvopasture grazing systems on their farm. We will address the practical considerations of tree establishment\, protection\, and maintenance while learning how silvopasture can help address your farm’s resource concerns and enhance livestock grazing. \nPlease plan to arrive by 8:45 AM to get registered as we will begin promptly at 9 AM. \nOur presenter: Joshua Greene\, Director of Education at Trees For Graziers\, runs Greene Kitchen Farm with his wife Nichole and their children. They custom graze certified organic dairy heifers and raise grass-fed beef & pastured poultry for direct market and ‘good eating”. The family has worked to build a flexible\, low-input grazing system\, they have planted over 2000 trees to provide shade for livestock. \nAbout Wild Geese Farm: A 52 acre farm\, raising Hereford cattle and Katahdin sheep. They have been rotationally grazing livestock for 30+ years/ Farm products include breeding stock along with grass-fed beef and lamb. This is their second season grazing within silvopasture planting while further developing an integrated system for the farm.
