Beginning Farmers: Help us, Help You!

Northeast Beginning Farmer Project Seeks Respondents for Phase 2 of Beginning Farmer Needs Survey
Starting a farm is difficult, and succeeding beyond the first few years may be even more so. According to USDA definition, farmers are considered “beginners” until they have been in operation for 10 years. Many new farmers don’t make it to that point. Help us identify how agencies, organizations and policy makers can best assist farmers to thrive beyond the start-up phase. What resources are needed, what educational opportunities should be developed, what resources are missing that will help beginning farmers be successful entrepreneurs? Your experience and input is essential to getting it right.

Results will be used by beginning farmer service providers to guide efforts toward solving the highest priority beginning farmer problems. USDA and other policy makers are very interested in the results of this effort, and will help direct energy toward beginning farmers’ most critical concerns.

We are looking for responses from aspiring and beginning farmers age 10 and up, with less than 10 years of experience, and from staff at agencies and organizations that serve beginning farmers. The Barrier ID Survey – Phase 2 will take about 30 min. to complete online. To make the survey process a little more fun, we’ll be offering four great agricultural prizes worth at least $50. Your chance of winning is 1 in 100. Tell us about your farm needs today!

This project was supported by the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, USDA, Grant # 2009-49400-05878.
